Graymont to Expand its Victoria, Australia Operations to Deliver Higher Lime Volumes, Low Emissions

May 4, 2023, Traralgon, Australia -- Graymont today confirmed that it is proceeding with planning and detailed engineering for a significant expansion and diversification of its operations in southeastern Australia, to satisfy increased lime demand in the Victoria region and other burgeoning markets in eastern Australia.

The Traralgon Project will entail an upgrade and expansion of Graymont’s existing lime plant in Traralgon, Victoria, utilizing advanced high-efficiency kiln technology intended to deliver significant reductions of carbon and other regulated emissions. It also includes the addition of a new hydration plant at the facility and an expansion of Graymont’s operations at the associated limestone quarry in Buchan, Victoria.

“The Traralgon Project is designed to deliver markedly higher production output and significantly lower emissions versus producing and transporting lime from other production sites: that’s a pretty compelling equation,” observed Graymont CEO Stéphane Godin. “Our intention is to proceed with this project as quickly as possible to meet customer requirements. We are targeting commissioning the new equipment in the first half of 2026.”

Andrew Speed, President Asia Pacific for Graymont, noted, too, that the project team is working closely with local residents, councils and other stakeholders, as well as regulatory authorities, to ensure that Graymont understands and addresses any potential environmental and community concerns and is properly equipped to meet all required regulatory requirements and mitigate impacts which might result from the proposed expansion.

“Our proactive approach to enhancing and expanding our Australian operations further demonstrates both our capacity and willingness to invest in strengthening our position as a global industry leader,” Godin added. “Wherever Graymont operates, we aim to be the preferred supplier, employer, and partner of choice.”

The expanded and enhanced facility will produce a variety of lime and limestone products designed to help address society’s needs, facilitating applications that range from purifying our air and water to supporting construction of infrastructure and the manufacturing of steel and other metals, asphalt and paper.

The existing Traralgon and Buchan operations were acquired by Graymont in 2019 when it purchased lime plants and a number of limestone quarries in eastern Australia, as well as in Malaysia and the Philippines.
