Limestone Grit

Dried limestone grit is manufactured from selected limestone and is ground to various size fractions.

Graymont monitor quality starting at the resource and at various stages in the process. Consistency of grind, screening and management of moisture content are controlled throughout the production process to deliver predictable and repeatable product performance.

Limestone grit products are often included in specific feed blends, dependent upon the life stage of the Broiler or Layer bird being reared.

Calcium (Ca) is recognised as an essential nutrient and is involved in many important biological processes. This mineral, along with phosphorus, is the most abundant element in a bird’s body with 99% of calcium and 80% of phosphorus stored in the skeleton as hydroxyapatite.

Both play important roles in bone development and mineralization. The remaining Ca is located in the extracellular fluid, plasma, and within cells, and plays pivotal roles in metabolism, blood clotting, enzyme activation, neuromuscular function, muscle contraction, cell adhesion, and intracellular signalling.

The grit shape and size is also important as it lodges in the bird’s gizzard and allows it to grind its food correctly.  Correct calcium levels in the diet are therefore vital.

Limestone grit as a carrier mineral

Dried limestone chip products are sometimes used as a carrier mineral for trace element coating and application in the fertilizer sector.
