Food and produce – An essential ingredient

There are many uses of lime and limestone in the food industry such as: brine manufacture for vegetable preservation, as a compound to assist in the process of refining sugar, lime powder treatment in tortilla production and to absorb CO2 during the storage of fruits and vegetables.

Food

When used in storage facilities, Graymont’s Hydrated Lime absorbs the carbon dioxide
(CO2) that exudes from ripening fresh produce. This helps maintain a higher ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide, permitting fruit and vegetables to be stored for a longer period of time.

As a processing aid or ingredient, Graymont’s strategic partner, Mexican based Grupo Calidra, manufactures high quality hydrated lime for use in the food industry under the Nixtacal brand.
