October 12, 2007, Townsend — On October 5, Graymont’s Indian Creek Plant held a special celebration to note their achievement of reaching 4 years without a lost time accident. Employees and their spouses were treated to a catered “pitch-fork fondue” steak dinner – a specialty of a local catering service. Twelve steaks at a time are cooked fondue style in extremely hot suet for just three minutes while being held on pitchforks – with incredibly tasty results! Forty four people were able to attend, including Mike Brown, Vice President of Environmental Affairs and Bryan Nielson, Vice President of Operations and his wife Kyle who came from Salt Lake City to offer their congratulations.
Indian Creek Plant, located near Townsend Montana, has an outstanding record for safety, an achievement credited by Elton Chorney, Plant Manager, to the attitude towards safety that all employees embrace. Everyone is responsible for not only their own safety, but also for the safety of their fellow employees, meaning they are comfortable in correcting and making suggestions to fellow employees to help keep them safe. The safety committee is chaired by hourly employees, helping to bring the message of safety on the job closer to all who work there. One of the more humorous approaches to keeping the safety message uppermost in the minds of employees at Indian Creek is the strategic placement of mirrors in the rest rooms that are labeled with the following caption: “The person you are looking at is responsible for safety at this plant.”
