Graymont touts benefits of hydrated lime in asphalt applications and committed to expand its Australian operations

June 2nd, 2022, Sydney, Australia -- Graymont has reaffirmed its commitment to invest in a significant expansion of its Australian operations to ensure a reliable supply of high-quality lime and limestone products to domestic customers, including asphalt producers.

Addressing a meeting of the Australian Flexible Pavement Association in Australia, Graymont highlighted how incorporating hydrated lime into hot-mix asphalt has proven to significantly reduce stripping, rutting, cracking and aging — a cost-effective solution that can extend years of service life to highways or other crucial infrastructure.

Referencing several major infrastructure projects currently being implemented in Australia that might benefit from lime-based solutions, including the 1,700 km Inland Rail fast freight network which will connect Melbourne and Brisbane, Graymont reaffirmed to the audience that if lime is part of the solution, the Company’s objective is to be a reliable supply partner.

Acknowledging supply chain challenges and the impact of the current inflationary environment, Graymont has reinforced its ability to tap into its international production network. The Company has also affirmed its intention to proceed with sizeable investments, in the magnitude of several hundred million Australian dollars, to expand and upgrade its quicklime, hydrated lime and limestone production capacity in Australia over the next several years. These investments will follow on the heels of the successful restart of the Company’s Charbon plant in 2021, as well as significant upgrades undertaken to improve the operational performance of its plants in New South Wales — at a cost of more than AU$ 50 million following Graymont’s 2019 acquisition of Sibelco’s lime and limestone assets in Australia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

“Our proactive approach to enhancing and expanding our Australian operations further demonstrates both our capacity and our willingness to invest in strengthening our position as a global industry leader,” Graymont CEO Stéphane Godin observed. “Wherever Graymont operates, we aim to be the preferred supplier, employer, and partner of choice – and Australia is certainly no exception in that respect.”
